EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF AUTHOR MEGAN AMIN WITH DE MODE

Q: what inspired you to write children's books like Zebbie's Courage and Ozzy and The Impossible?

A. I've always loved reading with my children so writing my own books gives me the opportunity to share an important message with them whilst at the same time enjoying all the adventure that reading brings. Writing a children's book has always been a dream of mine and as Ozzy himself says "Anything is possible with a dream it would seem "!I've always loved reading with my children so writing my own books gives me the opportunity to share an important message with them whilst at the same time enjoying all the adventure that reading brings . Writing a children's book has always been a dream of mine and as Ozzy himself says "Anything is possible with a dream it would seem "!

Q: Both Zebbie's Courage and Ozzy's The Impossible seem to carry themes of courage and determination. What message do you hope young readers take away from your stories?

A. Zebbie's Courage endeavors to teach that courage is choosing to be seen over sitting out; giving things a go is better than never trying at all even when you don't know the outcome. Zebbie teaches us to be all in no matter even when we lose and others doubt us it's all an adventure. Ozzy teaches children to be joyful, he is determined even in trying times and he is steadfast in his quest to be himself no matter what, he celebrates who he is rather than who he is not. I want children to never underestimate themselves and what the impact of effort is to control their future.

Q: Can you share a bit about the creative process behind developing characters like Zebbie and Ozzy? Do they draw from personal experiences or imagination?

A. When creating Zebbie he was really derived from my imagination He is an empathetic kind character so a cuddly bear seemed fit for his story, who doesn't love a cuddly bear?! The heart on his t-shirt represents his courage, a heart of gold and kindness. My father painted a picture for my son's room of an ostrich on a surfboard so that is where the idea of Ozzy's character was born. It was such a fun painting and I knew he was perfect for a story. I wanted him to wear clothes that represented his character, he wears a blue feather on his side representing freedom and determination to fly. He features in Zebbie's courage in the race scene and I hope to make a story from each of those characters in the race.

Q: How do you approach stories that resonate with children while also imparting valuable life lessons?

A. I like to use language that resonates with children, both boos use rhyme as a way to tell the story. I believe this makes the reading more fun, particularly in the early years. Rhyming also makes the words more memorable and this helps cultivate a positive mindset. "The true win was that he took heart and the courage to be smart." (Zebbie's courage) I hope that some of these rhymes in the book become memorable and children can apply them to their own situations in life.

Q: In "Zebbie's Courage" Zebbie learns the power of belief in one's self. Why do you think instilling self-belief is important for children and how do your books foster this belief?

A. Zebbie learns the power of self-belief teaching children to be fully seen as themselves, unique and whole. We all remember the competitive nature of sports day at school and the sense of both fear and joy that brings. Children live in a competitive world and it's important for them to see that courage holds an element of fear but with self-belief, it's ok to lose at times because it's better to lose and fail and times than never try at all. I want children to cheer for themselves, it's so important in a society now so influenced by social media notions of perfection. Zebbie is loveable and empathetic and I hope children are drawn to him; determination can be quiet and a dream can be achievable.

Q: Ozzy and The Impossible seems to explore the idea of pursuing dreams even if they seem unattainable. What inspired you to write about the power of dreams and perseverance?

A. Children inspire me every day, at a young age they know no fear and they go for it but as they grow older and the pressures of those around them close in, they become more conscious of themselves and doubt creeps in. I wanted Ozzy to keep that fire that burns in him alive in them, the joy. It's important for children to understand their uniqueness, Ozzy knows wholeheartedly he is different from the other ostriches and knows that's fine! Everything in the world seems so instant these days, Ozzy shows that perseverance is important to success.

Q: Can you share any memorable reactions or feedback you've received from young readers or their parents about your books?

A. I recently visited St Edmunds Pre prep school in Canterbury to read to them. I had some lovely feedback from one of the year two teachers: "We loved listening to the stories; the language is beautiful, and the message is so perfect for the trials and tribulations of this generation of children. We love your books, they are so delightful and the stories (and you) are an inspiration to us. (Elizabeth Sherwin, St Edmunds pre-prep school ) .

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring book authors who want to share meaningful stories with young readers?

A. I would say don't give up! I was turned down by other publishers. It's never too late in life to pursue a dream. As Ozzy says if you feel it in your feather it's surely worth a go, Worth it to let your heart flow "Ozzy and The Impossible”. We are the role models for the younger generation and if you have a meaningful message to uplift a child that grows a child's self-belief in themselves, you have a gift! Shout it from the rooftops!
