South Korea's Constitutional Court overturned Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s impeachment on Monday, reinstating him as acting leader. The ruling does not directly impact the pending verdict on President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached earlier over his controversial martial law decree. However, it may energize Yoon’s supporters and intensify political divisions.

Han had stepped in as acting president after Yoon’s impeachment by the opposition-led National Assembly. However, he too was later impeached following political clashes with lawmakers. With both leaders suspended, Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok briefly assumed leadership. The court ruled Han’s impeachment lacked legal grounds or procedural validity, with seven of eight justices dismissing the charges.
Meanwhile, Yoon, who faces rebellion charges over his use of martial law, was released from detention to stand trial. His actions, including deploying troops to the assembly, remain highly contentious, fueling large protests across South Korea.
