South Korea’s Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Friday, officially removing him from office over his brief imposition of martial law last year. The controversial decree, which lasted only six hours, triggered the nation’s worst political crisis in decades.

With Yoon’s dismissal, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days. Until then, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president. Meanwhile, Yoon, 64, faces a criminal trial on insurrection charges. Arrested in January but released in March, he denies any wrongdoing, arguing the martial law was necessary to counter “anti-state” forces.
Lawmakers swiftly rejected Yoon’s declaration, sparking mass protests and political turmoil. As the country struggles with economic slowdown and a shifting alliance under U.S. President Donald Trump, it remains uncertain whether the court’s decision will bring stability or further deepen South Korea’s divisions.
