Q: The Dark Series has garnered significant attention and acclaim. What inspired you to explore the realm of dark fiction and the themes of light and darkness?
A. The Dark Series started out as writing something I wanted to read that I just couldn’t find out in the publishing world. The inspiration in crafting my fictionalized fantasy dark realm was to also teach that even during dark times there is still a silver lining of light to hold onto.
Q: 'The Darkest Side of the Moon' kicks off your Dark Series. Can you give us a glimpse into the world you've created and the journey readers can expect to embark on?
A. The Darkest Side of the Moon was inspired by a dream I had and life challenges I’ve faced along the way that everyone faces today. The journey readers can embark on, what happens when pushed over the edge. It doesn’t always end well, but there are lessons to learn in your darkest hour.
Q: The Dark Series comprises several books, each exploring different facets of darkness and light. How do you approach crafting interconnected stories while ensuring each book stands on its own?
A. Each book explores different characters and how they approach the darkness within them. My goal for the series was to craft stories that had a satisfying ending that left the reader a choice if they wanted to continue or not. I ensured to approach each story with individuals from different backgrounds before recognizing what truly connected them all.
Q: 'A Darker Demise' offers a compilation of dark shorts within The Dark Series universe. What draws you to the short story format, and how does it complement the overarching narrative of the series?
A. A Darker Demise gave me the ability to explore some minor characters that were important to The Dark Series and give them more of a voice while also giving a more in-depth background to The Dark Series universe. Writing the stories in short story format took pressure off writing a fulllength novel and assisted with piecing together what direction to take the series next.
Q: In addition to the Dark Series, you've also written books like 'How to Stand Up to Bullying' and 'The Neighbors'. How do these works differ from your dark fiction, and what themes do they explore?
A. While writing my debut novel, The Darkest Side of the Moon, I incorporated bullying as a subject matter. I had not planned on writing How to Stand Up to Bullying, however it was therapeutic writing during a time in my life when there was constant bullying happening around me to family and friends in which I felt powerless. After reading what I wrote, I couldn’t keep it to myself as it had the power to make a positive impact. The short story, The Neighbors, is part of The Dark Series universe that explores the nursing world and why some may go into a certain field without realizing why it calls to them.
Q: As an award-winning author, what do you believe sets your writing apart and resonates with readers?
A. I believe what sets my writing apart is, I write what I want to read and know I’m not the only one who craves something fresh. What I believe resonates with readers is the genuine approach I take with relatable characters.
Q: Your bio mentions your affinity for exploring off the beaten path, both figuratively and literally. How does this adventurous spirit influence your writing, particularly in crafting unique and compelling storylines?
A. Having an adventurous spirit allows me to take daring risks while viewing things through a different perspective. The majority of my exploring off the beaten path during nature walks inspired some of my best storyline ideas.
Q: Residing in the Keystone State with a clowder of felines who rule the house sounds like a fascinating backdrop for a writer. How does your environment inspire or influence your creative process?
A. There’s never a dull moment in the house with my clowder of felines. Their unique and different antics definitely helped me get into the mindset of a cat. There’s a character in The Dark Series, Leo, who is an orange tabby who gets his own story in Infinity Tales. The clowder also has their own Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theclowder0/
Q: Long trail walks during the cozy tinge of Autumn seem like an ideal setting for inspiration. Can you share any moments or experiences from nature that have found their way into your writing?
A. Going out on long trail walks allows me to focus away from all the noise. I incorporated the sights and sounds into scenes that take place out in nature, like the scraping of trees against each other when the wind makes them sway or the shape of a boulder that looks like a triangle. Sometimes even nature comes to my back door, like an evening visit from an opossum munching on beetles at the end of summertime. The encounter inspired the character Mutsu in my forthcoming novel The Darkened Enchantment.
Q: Music with deep lyrical meaning is another one of your interests. How does music influence your writing style or the themes you explore in your books?
A. Music has the power to connect individuals and paints a different picture for everyone with the same words sung. Music also has the power to inspire. It’s inspired many scenes in The Dark Series and when I’m faced with writer’s block, it’s music that often helps reignite the spark.
Q: Reading a variety of genres is essential for any writer. Are there any particular genres or authors that have had a significant impact on your writing journey?
A. Absolutely! I crave good stories that keep the pages turning from any genre like mystery, thrillers, horror, fantasy, young adult, and even historical fiction. I’m a fan of the never a dull moment action in Iris Johansen novels. Know I’m going to enjoy any thriller Chevy Stevens publishes. Love a good mystery that leads me astray that Carlene Thompson manages to throw me off the trail. Appreciate the heartwarming stories that captures authenticity in Kristin Hannah and Ruta Sepetys novels. Everything I read has had an impact on my continuous writing journey.
Q: With multiple books published, including those in The Dark Series, what challenges have you encountered along the way, and how have you overcome them?
A. The challenges I encountered along the way include making editing mistakes and learning the best methods for me by trial and error in making my manuscripts cleaner while embracing it’s okay to be imperfect. I am human after all and my own worst critic. I’ve also struggled with trying to avoid marketing scams, but still falling victim to them as not everyone will share your best interest. The biggest challenge I face is trying to convince readers to invest their time in my craft which I’m still learning and growing in my author journey.
Q: What advice would you offer to aspiring authors who are looking to explore darker themes in their writing or embark on their series?
A. Advice I’d like to offer, don’t be afraid to experiment outside of your comfort zone. The best way to learn what you are capable of is to just write and see where it leads. At the end of the writing journey, you have a choice in whether or not to share with reader’s eyes.
Q: As you continue to expand your literary portfolio, what can readers expect from you in the future? Are there any upcoming projects or new directions you're excited to explore? Finally, what message or emotions do you hope readers take away from The Dark Series and other works?
A. By the time this interview gets published, the next books in The Dark Series should be available which include The Darkened Enchantment and the tie-in short, Infinity Tales. Readers can also anticipate the last book in The Dark Series, When Darksome Falls, planned for either the end of 2024 or beginning of 2025. Another upcoming project that readers can expect is a short memoir about my journey as an author before moving into a new unexpected direction. The emotions I hope readers take away are all the feels and left wanting more. My hope is to inspire readers to always reach for the light deep within themselves.
