V. Narayanan has been appointed as the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the secretary of the Department of Space, with his tenure beginning on January 14, 2025. He succeeds S. Somanath and will serve in this capacity for two years or until further government directives.
Narayanan brings nearly four decades of experience in rocket and spacecraft propulsion to this role. He has made significant contributions to India's space program, including his tenure as the director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). His expertise has been pivotal in developing key technologies like ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and other advancements critical to ISRO's propulsion capabilities. He has also played an integral role in projects like the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV).
Under his leadership, ISRO will continue to advance groundbreaking technologies, such as the indigenous SpaDex space docking technology, which is crucial for missions like Chandrayaan-4 and Gaganyaan. Narayanan’s appointment signals ISRO's commitment to expanding its capabilities in space exploration and technology.
